Recognising that the heart of any stud operation is the quality of the female herd, we purchased cattle from the Monterey Angus Mature Female Dispersal Sale in January 2014. A further 10 cow with calves at foot were purchased privately in October 2015. This herd formed our nucleus as importantly the stud had sold over 40 bulls that year to Thomas Foods International, SA’s premier meat processor, who attributed their purchase to the outstanding carcass qualities of the stud. These cattle really performed on grass, were soft, quiet and wonderful mothers.
We then added cattle from the 2015 Belles of Banquet Female Sale in November. The opportunity to add outstanding female family lines of Irene and Wivem. So impressed we were by the quality of the animals that we returned to buy privately a Dream cow G259 with a heifer at foot. These cattle had lovely temperaments and a brilliant frame on which to build a soft carcass.
In March 2016, our first Millah Murrah embryos were born. These had been purchased in early 2015 recognising the genetic strength and specifically the maternal families this successful stud had bred since 1969. Further embryos were purchased and implanted in June 2016.
These cattle were complimented by adding a number of heifers and cows from Chapel Hill Angus, the scaled down operations of the famous Glen Bold Angus stud that dispersed in 1997.
Recognising the time it had taken to build up through natural breeding our Silver Angus herd, AI and ET techniques were engaged immediately to ensure that the genetics chosen could be replicated to build up the necessary numbers of breeding animals.
